How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Even though a stellar resume can get your experience and skills recognized during the recruitment process, it is the job interview that can either make or break your chances of working with an organization. The interview process provides employers an opportunity to assess skills that may not even be listed on your resume. Soft skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving are often times assessed during interviews. Even though most job seekers approach an interview with the idea that they are being assessed, it is also important to remember that as an applicant you are also assessing the organization. Although the interview process can seem like a daunting experience, the key to successfully navigating this process is preparation. Whether your interview is in person or virtual, a few tips that might help you prepare for the interview include:

1.     Read the job description multiple times:

It is important to really understand the job description and what the organization is looking for. Prepare to articulate how your skills and abilities are a great fit for the role.

2.     Research the organization:

It is important to understand what the organization actually does. A great place to start is reading the organization’s mission and vision statements. Understand what products or services the organization is providing and any recent projects that the organization is involved in. Read about the organization’s values and also try to get a sense of their organizational culture. Even though a job may sound great, it is important to ensure that your personal values align with the organization’s values and culture.

3.     Practice commonly asked interview questions:

Anticipate questions that may be asked during an interview and practice responding to them. Pay attention to your tone, voice, and other body language expressions. It may be helpful to practice in front of a mirror or in front of friends or family members.

4.     Dress the part:

Ensure that you dress appropriately for the interview. Most people wear a suit. This helps you look professional. It also shows you took the time to prepare and that you are taking the process seriously. Even if you think the organization has a very casual business attire, it is better to be overdressed than underdressed during an interview.

5.     Prepare to ask questions:

The interview process is also your chance to assess the organization and determine whether you would even like to work for them. Ensure that you have well thought out questions to clarify any concerns about the role as well as questions that will help you learn more about the organizational culture.

Due to COVID-19 most interviews are currently virtual. Therefore, also consider doing the following:

6.     Test your technology before the interview:

Do a dry run with a friend or family member using the same platform that you will be using during the interview in the same room that you will be interviewing in. Ask your friend/family member to comment on how you sound.

7.     Ensure proper lighting:

If the interview includes a visual component, ensure that the room is well lit so that the other person can see you properly.

8.     Sit in a quiet room:

Find a quiet place within your home to conduct the interview. This will help avoid any distractions from occurring during the interview.
